Take (Make) Time

In my house are several plants of differing varieties potted in small, medium and large containers. Since my wife’s decease, I try to maintain the plants, but I have difficulty in keeping them watered properly—either too much, too little or too infrequently. When I notice drooping leaves, I know I have neglected essential watering.
In thinking about my negligence in providing regular watering for these plants, I then question whether I’m just as negligent in providing for my spiritual needs. Just as I get so busy with other things that I forget watering the plants, I wonder if I get too busy with so many things in my daily living that I neglect to spend time in the Word, thus failing to “feed” and “water” my soul.
Longstaff wrote over a century ago in an old hymn, “Take time to be holy…speak oft with thy Lord…feed on His word…” How important for us to heed these admonitions lest the busyness of daily living crowd out the place the Lord must have in our lives.
As we begin a new year, may we take (or make) the time to spend with the Lord in His word, in prayer as well as in assemblies of worship.
